The Arizona Immigration Law: Since when did Fascism become Fashionable?

The Arizona Immigration Law: Since when did Fascism become Fashionable?

July 28, 2010.  That’s the day.  Ten years from now when we live in a society which vaguely resembles the one envisioned by our founding fathers and we wonder of when our freedoms crumbled, July 28, 2010 should come to mind.  You see, that’s the day that the Arizona Senate Bill 1070 (often called SB1070) will go into effect.

This law should absolutely appall all Americans.  Especially, Conservatives.  Do you remember when you learned about the Nazis in high school and wondered how in the world the German people could let that happen.   I think it started somewhat based on fear for their jobs and welfare of their families.  It started like SB1070.  But in this case, replace the word “Jews” with “Mexicans”.

A key tenet of conservatism is the government just can’t be trusted. Even with proper motives of legislatures, given enough time, governments abuse power ceded to them by the people.   SB1070 as it’s called makes it a crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying legal documents.  Any police officer can demand to see papers from someone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Bon Jovi and Cheesesteaks in New York State? It could happen.

Bon Jovi and Cheesesteaks in New York State? It could happen.

Immigration is a major topic in the news this week.  Everyone has an opinion, but there are elements to the issue that still are just considered too taboo to be discussed publicly.  We at MullerOver headquarters are unafraid, and prepared to break the silence on the tough issues that others just won’t say.

Specifically, we’re talking about the flood of Pennsylvanians and New Jerseyites crossing over the New York border without any sort of challenge.  As a parent of young children, I don’t believe my kids should have to look at someone wearing a Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt or whatever sport they have in New Jersey.   I even once heard someone refer to our beloved Thruway as the “Turnpike”!  What?  When does the madness stop? Earthquakes, Volcanoes and American Idol – Oh my!

Earthquakes, Volcanoes and American Idol – Oh my!

What a week!  Western Europe is covered in a volcanic, sulfuric cloud, possibly making air travel difficult for months, earthquakes shake the globe from China to Spain to Utah, and the event that truly made no sense and left us all shaking our heads at MullerOver headquarters, Andrew Garcia was voted off American Idol.  So – on to the news!

In the prophetic words of Jerry Lee Lewis, “There’s a whole lotta shaking going on”

According to the LA Times, there’s been far more earthquakes in Southern California this year than any other year of the last decade – and it’s

only April!  That’s not even counting the devastation in Haiti, Mexico, Chili and China recently.  We consulted with our MullerOver on-staff geologist, Jacques, about what our readers could do to prepare for an earthquake.  After seconds of deep thought, Jacques suggests wearing roller skates to minimize the effects of the shaking.  Come to think of it – we’re not sure why we hired a geologist in the first place.  In our defense, he does interview very well though. The Rubik’s Healthcare System

The Rubik’s Healthcare System

If you’re over 30, you probably remember that ever frustrating but addictive puzzle, the Rubik’s Cube. You see, everyone starts to solve the Rubik’s Cube the same way – a side at a time. So, after some practice, you might be able to solve for one of the six colors. OK – now onto the second color, and somewhere along the way, you realize that your efforts to solve additional sides are messing up the original side you’ve already fixed.

The problem is you can’t solve the Rubik’s Cube with tunnel vision by looking at a portion of the whole. There are four quintillion wrong combinations of the cube (really!) and one one right answer. Only with the entire, six-sided puzzle in mind and a systematic approach can you ever dream of solving for all sides simultaneously. Read more »

Yes Virginia, There Is a Snow Monster

Yes Virginia, There Is a Snow Monster

Ever get the impression that nature is just messing with us now? Virginia is hit

with the biggest snow storm in their history while the Winter Olympics in Canada gets rain and fog. Even Dallas and Atlanta received snow on the day of the Opening Ceremony.   The irony is palpable.

In fact, this week, the Washington Bureau of MullerOver.com called in and claimed they couldn’t even open the doors to their houses.  Likely story.   So, this week’s edition will have little commentary on national politics while we wait for them to dig out and make it back into the press room.  Onto the (non-political) news! The Cult of Personality… and the Cult

The Cult of Personality… and the Cult

What a week!  The introduction of Apple iPad and State of the Union delivered by Barack Obama.  It was an incredibly persuasive speech by a charismatic leader trying to take over the U.S. economy and control the way every American lives.  But we’ll discuss  Steve Jobs launching the iPad later.

The Cult of Personality  (The idealized and heroic public image of a nation’s leader)

First, the State of the Union Address.  You know, I don’t see any reason to buy one of those expensive Jane Fonda-type work-out videos.  I just watch the speech and stand when Nancy Pelosi stands to clap, and sit when she sits.   I only made it half way through the speech

until I nearly collapsed in exhaustion.

It’s amazing. No – I mean their stamina.  I wonder if they spend all fall working out in preparation of applauding at the big speech. Read more »

NBC: You’re Looking Like a Fool with Your Pants on the Ground

The MullerOver editorial staff is back from a long awaited Christmas break.  Countless people around the Internet have lamented that they were completely lost on how to interpret the news of the day without our weekly commentary.  Unfortunately, we lost a day of productivity at MullerOver Headquarters because we couldn’t come to a consensus as to who should clean the coffee pot/giant Petri dish from before Christmas.  Fortunately, we found a pack of instant coffee in the back of Smitty’s drawer which should hold us over until a new coffee maker arrives from the Brookstone.  Now – onto the news … Read more »
